Blue Minerals Chalk Paint Powder

I came across Blue Minerals Chalk Powder a few months ago and was excited to give it a try.  Blue Minerals is a NATURAL paint additive designed to transform any latex or acrylic paint into an extremely porous, chalk style paint.

The thing that I was most excited about is that you can choose ANY COLOR and ANY BRAND of paint to mix this powder with.  Honestly, I was somewhat skeptical.  I have tried various home made chalk paint recipes in the past and have found them to be very gritty and not very effective, but this product is completely different and really surprised me.  I LOVED it and loved the unlimited color options it opened up for me.

Be sure to scroll all the way down for a special discount code just for you!

Blue Minerals comes in several sizes.  I have the 16 oz jar which will make 1 gallon of paint!  YES...ONE GALLON!  But not just one gallon of the same color.  Because you mix in 1 cup increments, this 16 oz jar would allow you you create 15 different colors for 15 different projects!  And how cute is that little jar?

I loved that I could just use sample pots of paint and have just enough for one project.  The sample pots are only $2.95 at Home Depot, so I was able to buy a few different colors to experiment with.

It is IMPORTANT that you follow the mixing instructions provided.  DO NOT try to mix the powder directly into your paint or you will have a lumpy mess. You will want to mix 2 Tbsp of powder with 1 Tbsp water and stir VERY WELL.  Make sure you get rid of all clumps and lumps.  Then add this mixture to 1 cup paint (which happens to be almost the exact amount in a sample pot!) SCORE!

There is no need for priming or sanding when using Blue Minerals.  Just start painting! This is the first coat on the sewing machine table.  I was working on this one inside, right in the middle of my kitchen.  I usually work in the garage, but it has been so cold here the past few weeks.  I am a whimp.

Things really start looking better on the second coat.

I always do a light sanding and a little distressing before waxing.

Be sure to check out this video on Waxing Like A Pro from the Blue Minerals website.

And let me stop here and share with you a product that is going to change your life...especially if you hate waxing, like me.  Do you remember when I said I had a TOP SECRET tool I was going to share with you?  Well this is it!

Blue Minerals sells this amazing Buffing Brush Drill Attachment.  If you are wanting to achieve a professional wax finish, but hate the time consuming and painful hand buffing process, this will be your new best friend.  You just apply a very light coat of wax with a waxing brush or cloth, then attach the buffing brush attachment to your drill and buff away.  It instantly creates a polished and professional finish.

And to show you just how much i loved this are some more lovelies I created with Blue Minerals.

I painted this Ikea stool with a color called Mossy Green mixed with Blue Minerals.  I decided not wax it or put any top coat on it.  I just lightly sanded and distressed and then left it.  My boys use this stool everyday and they are pretty rough with it.  After a few weeks, it still looks great and not a bit of the paint has scratched or peeled off.

I even transformed my personal dining table with Blue Minerals.

This was the sad before.  I got the table for $10 and the chairs for $8 each.  The top of the table was horrible and we have lived with it like this and have eaten on it for longer than I care to admit.  It seems like my personal projects always take the back burner.

Here is the after.  I completely refinished the top in Dark Walnut stain and used some Blue Minerals mixed with a Home Depot sample pot in Mossy Green for the bottom of the table.  The green is looking much brighter in these pictures than it actually is in person.  I just love the pop of color it gives the room.

And do I have a big surprise for you!?  Blue Mineral is giving the Funky Junk readers 20% off between now and April 30, 2014!  Just use code: FUNKY

What brand wax do you use in addition to the blue minerals? Thanks. Planning to buy some of this.

Blue Minerals sells Fiddes Wax as a topcoat for the paint powder. You can really use any wax or topcoat of your choice. I used wipe on poly for some of the Blue Minerals projects and the wax for others. It just depends on the piece and what finish you are trying to achieve. Hope that helps.

Thanks so much. I am going to place an order now. It is much cheaper than other brand chalk paints. Thanks for the coupon code.

Do you have to wax over the blue mineral chalk paint? Or can you leave it?
